How to Measure Your Belt Size (With a Chart for Indian Trouser Sizes)
The simplest rule is trouser waist plus two inches. Here is why, plus the two more accurate methods, a full chart in inches and cm, and how to handle being between sizes.

Ordering the wrong belt size is the most common reason belts get returned. The good news: it is easy to get right once you know which number to use.
The quick rule: trouser waist + 2
Look at the label on trousers that fit you well. If they say 32, order a 34 belt.
Why two inches more? Belt size is measured from the buckle's prong to the middle hole, not the total belt length. Your belt has to go around your trousers (which add thickness), pass through the buckle, and leave enough tail to tuck into the first loop. Two inches covers that, and puts you on the middle hole with room to tighten or loosen.
Full belt size chart
| Trouser waist (in) | Belt size (in) | Belt size (cm) | Usual label |
|---|---|---|---|
| 28 | 30 | 76 | S |
| 30 | 32 | 81 | S |
| 32 | 34 | 86 | M |
| 34 | 36 | 91 | M |
| 36 | 38 | 97 | L |
| 38 | 40 | 102 | L |
| 40 | 42 | 107 | XL |
| 42 | 44 | 112 | XL |
| 44 | 46 | 117 | XXL |
Method 2: measure a belt that fits (most accurate)
- Lay a belt you wear regularly on a flat surface.
- Measure from the fold at the buckle (not the tip of the buckle) to the hole you use most.
- That number in inches is your size.
This beats the trouser label because brands size trousers differently. Many Indian brands' "32" measures closer to 33–34 inches in reality.
Method 3: measure your body
Wrap a tape measure around where you wear your belt, over your trousers, with the tape snug but not tight. Round up to the nearest even number. That is your belt size. Note that this is not your trouser waist: jeans usually sit lower on the hips than formal trousers, so the measurement is larger there.
If you are between sizes
- Choose the larger size. You can always use a tighter hole; you cannot add leather.
- Consider a cut-to-fit belt. Auto-lock plate buckle belts and reversible belts are trimmed at the buckle end for an exact length.
- Consider a braided belt. A braided leather belt fastens anywhere along the weave.
Formal vs jeans: do you need different sizes?
Often, yes. Formal trousers sit at your natural waist; most jeans sit 1–3 inches lower, on the hips, where you are usually wider. Many men wear one size larger for jeans than for formal trousers.
What about S, M, L belts?
Belts sold as S/M/L each cover about 4 inches, so the fit is approximate and you often end up on the first or last hole. We size in two-inch steps, which is why the fit is noticeably better.
Common mistakes
- Ordering your trouser size. You'll end up on the last hole.
- Measuring to the buckle tip. It adds 1–2 inches and you'll order too large.
- Ignoring rise. Low-rise jeans need a larger belt than high-waisted trousers.
Still unsure? Message us your trouser size and how you wear your trousers, and we will confirm before you pay. That's the advantage of ordering on WhatsApp. The full chart also lives on our size guide page.
