Formal Leather Belts: buying guide

A formal belt should disappear into an outfit: narrow enough for dress trouser loops, polished enough to sit next to leather shoes, and plain enough that nobody notices it except to register that it is right. These are the belts for office days, interviews, weddings and every occasion with a blazer.

How to choose a formal belt

Width. Formal trousers have narrow loops, so choose 30–35 mm. A 30 mm belt is the most formal and suits a three-piece suit or a tuxedo-style outfit; 35 mm is the everyday office width that also works with chinos on the weekend.

Colour. Match your belt to your shoes. Black shoes need a black belt; brown, tan and oxblood shoes need a brown belt in a similar depth of colour. If you own only one formal belt, choose black. If you own two, add a dark brown. Our guide to matching belt and shoe colours goes deeper.

Buckle. A small, flat, polished buckle in silver or gunmetal is the most formal. Avoid large brass or western-style buckles with a suit. Plate (auto-lock) buckles are smart and practical for long office days because they adjust in small steps rather than one-inch holes.

Leather. A formal belt is bent at the same point every day. Full-grain leather holds up to this; bonded and split leather tends to crack at the buckle fold and at the holes within months. Read full-grain vs top-grain vs genuine leather if you want to understand why.

Sizing a formal belt

Formal trousers sit at the natural waist, so your belt size is simply your trouser waist plus two inches. The belt size guide has the full chart in inches and centimetres.

Looking after it

Wipe the belt with a dry cloth after wearing, hang it or roll it loosely, and condition it every few months. Our leather belt care guide covers the details, including what to do if it gets wet in the monsoon.

Formal Leather Belts: questions

What width is best for a formal belt?

30 to 35 mm. A 30 mm belt is the most formal and suits slim suit trousers; 35 mm is the everyday office width that also works with chinos.

Should my belt match my shoes?

Yes, for formal wear. Black shoes take a black belt; brown, tan and oxblood shoes take a brown belt of a similar depth. Metals like buckle and watch should ideally match too.
